The Colour Orange
Posted on February 26 2019
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the colour orange? If you’re like most of us, it’s difficult not to think of that refreshing fruit that is known for its daily dose of good ol’ Vitamin C to ward off the common cold.
How about when you’re skimming through your social media stream? Does a flash of orange make you stop and take notice?
What about the use of orange for interiors? Orange is the colour of enthusiasm and extroversion and is very attention-grabbing. More than any other colour, it’s one of the more ‘controversial’ colours – people either love it or hate it. While the ’70s largely contributed in scaring people away from orange - think orange shag rugs and velvet sofas!
But get it right and orange will give your interior a new lease on life. The many tones of orange work well with both light neutrals and rich charcoal greys and blacks. If you're after more of an impact team it with its complementary colour of blue.
Here are some interesting titbits about the colour Orange:
🔸 Orange is the only colour that is named after an object
🔸 Orange doesn't rhyme with anything
🔸 Orange was first used as the name for a colour in 1542
🔸 Orange was known as ‘ġeolurēad‘ which literally meant ‘yellow-red’ in French
🔸 Orange is commonly used for robes worn by Buddhist monks and represents a commitment to perfection or illumination
🔸 Nobility were the only ones during the Elizabethan era who could wear orange
🔸 Wassily Kandinsky said "Orange is red brought nearer to humanity by yellow."
🔸 Alexander the Great washed his hair in saffron to keep it a lovely shiny orange colour. During his time saffron was as rare as diamonds and more expensive than gold
